About the Course

Termination occurs when an employer or employee ends an employee's employment with a particular employer. Termination can be voluntary or involuntary depending on the circumstances.  Texas is an at will state; an employee may be fired for any reason, at any time, with or without cause. Employers do not even have to give a reason for why the employee is terminated from his or her job. To defend against potential charges of discrimination, however, employers are advised to keep documentation even if no case is presented at the termination meeting. This session will review the rights of the charter school in the event of voluntary termination. Involuntary termination and mutual agreement termination as well as best practices in documentation, and communication involved in termination.

Mowbray, Karen Termination Management

Karen Mowbray, MBA, is the CEO and founder of Charter School Success.  The mission of CSS is to help Texas charter schools with efficient, compliant and financially strong business office operations. Karen and her team provide charter school consulting, training and back office accounting services to several Texas charter schools.

Karen also is the creator of Charter School Business Officer Certification (CSBOC), the certification program for Texas Charter School Business Officers, endorsed by TCSA.  CSBOC brings the knowledge needed to business officers through webinars, live trainings, and access to great resources. When Karen started at charter schools, she had a steep learning curve on how Texas Charter Schools Business worked. She is passionate ab out making that learning curve easier for others and is sharing her knowledge through this program.

Karen worked in the financial services and healthcare industry for 19 years before finding her love of charter schools.  She served as the Business Officer of Mosbacher Odyssey Academy in Galveston, TX for eight years. In those years, Odyssey faced many of the Texas Charter School challenges involving money, facilities and creating from scratch the “How To Book” on a Texas Charter School Business Office.  Under Karen’s direction, Odyssey Academy went from owing TEA and the IRS over $250,000 and a negative fund balance to a transformed school with a positive fund balance of $3.5 million.  Odyssey was able to obtain a BBB- rating and completed a multi-million dollar bond issue, upgrading from a rented church school facility to an owned, newly renovated 73,000 sq. ft. facility.

Karen obtained her engineering degree from Purdue University and completed her MBA to round out her business skills.  Karen loves training, consulting and providing services that use her knowledge gained while working in the charter school industry and combining it with her 19 years experience in corporate consulting to provide charter schools with the tools to become SUCCESSFUL!
